Hope Paediatric Clinic caters for HIV positive children aged between a day old to 15years. We are a child friendly clinic that provides:
Medical Care,
When one opens a file, he/she has to be tested, knows their status, or has a referral letter from another hospital/clinic.
Routine medical review, comprehensive care treatment, consultation, laboratory testing for HIV related conditions and other common infections and chest X-ray services and admission are all free.
Anti-retroviral drugs and other drugs for HIV related conditions and other common illness are also free.
Counsellor
There are several sessions that take place in this department for both the caregiver and the child.
Adherence counselling session – giving information about medication, how to take them, challenges that one is likely to encounter while on ARVs and its side effects.
General counselling session- to give support and way forward incase of any arising challenges or issues surrounding the client’s life. Disclosure session – this is to help in the process of disclosure or letting the children know of their HIV status. The caregivers/parents are taken systematically on how to go about disclosure, how to initiate the process, find way forward on the challenges experienced in the process.
Play therapy
It helps in the child’s cognitive growth and creativity. Counselor takes time to play with the child. Children communicate through play unlike adults who can express what they feel through talking.
Social Work,
This is where the child’s psychosocial welfare is met. The social worker takes the child or child’s guardian into a detailed account of the child’s social surrounding and status.
At the clinic, the children are engaged in child play therapy i.e. usage of a child’s fantasies and the symbolic meanings of his/her play as a medium for understanding and communicating with the child.
Organized children support group meetings where children come together to share ideas and learn from others.
Nutrition sessions
Here the child and his/her caregiver get dietary assessment and its importance. Close follow-up is done on special cases like low weight and height for the recommended age, food supplements are given to improve their health.
The clients siblings are also linked up to the food supplements to avoid sharing of the same and this is to ensure our client’s health comes first.
Paediatric Home Tracer program.
It aims to assess and support household stability and ability to care for each child’s needs. Children are then assigned to field workers to monitor their progress often
