After many years of missionary work in and around the area of Maseno, Kenya, the Coptic Orthodox Church felt that lack of access to proper medical care was one of the most problematic areas facing the people it served. Numerous people were suffering from all types of sicknesses, many as severe as HIV/AIDS. The one thing that these people had in common was that they could not afford to see a doctor. The Coptic Church opened the Coptic Nursing Home in January of 2004 in order to provide affordable and proper medical care for those community members who were in need of medical attention. The church’s mission in opening this nursing home was to treat people not only medically, but emotionally and spiritually as well. Besides medical treatment, the church is fighting poverty and medical illiteracy through the clinic.

In April of 2006 the Coptic Hope Center Nairobi decided that a critical way to help the people in the Maseno area was to open its first daughter clinic, Coptic Hope Center Maseno. The Coptic Hope Center Maseno is also a fully comprehensive clinic that provides the same excellent care as its mother clinic. The Coptic Hope Center Maseno also provides HIV/AIDS awareness for church leaders, chiefs and teachers in the area who play a major role in the community. The awareness trainings have been a great success and have had great impact on the treatment that The Coptic Hope Center Maseno has to offer. The Coptic Hope Center Maseno now has a total of 600 patients with 325 on ARVs. Reaching these numbers has been a great challenge in this area due to the heavy stigmatization that still exists in this area but the Coptic Church knows it is a challenge and must continue to overcome it.
